SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

Social Emotional Learning at Opportunity Charter School

At Opportunity Charter School (OCS), we wholeheartedly believe in a whole student approach. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is integrated and supported throughout the entire school day.

What is Social Emotional Learning?

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which students learn and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Why is Social Emotional Learning Important?

SEL is so important because it helps students develop the skills they need to succeed, not just in school, but in their careers, and life. It supports their mental health, improves their academic performance, and fosters a positive school climate. Through SEL, students learn to navigate social difficulties, build strong relationships, and make thoughtful, caring decisions.

Our Dedicated SEL Team

At OCS, we have a team of dedicated Social Workers and a School Psychologist who are committed to supporting the social and emotional well-being of our students. They provide individualized support, counseling, and resources to ensure that each student can thrive both emotionally and academically.

Advisory Class and "We Do It for the Culture" Curriculum

At OCS, students have an advisory class that utilizes the "We Do It for the Culture" curriculum, a social emotional learning program rooted in hip hop culture. This curriculum was specifically designed for black and brown students, providing culturally relevant content that resonates with their experiences and backgrounds. Through this innovative curriculum, students engage in meaningful discussions and activities that enhance their social and emotional development.
At Opportunity Charter School, we are dedicated to nurturing the whole student. Our comprehensive SEL program ensures that every student receives the support they need to grow, succeed, and flourish.
