OCS Newsletter #3OCS AnnouncementThis is an unprecedented time. On top of the stress from COVID-19, we have also suffered the pain of fatal violence against Black Americans, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and the subsequent protests.
Opportunity Charter School stands with the Black community and our hearts are aching for all of our students who are growing up in a country that is still so divided by racial injustice, ignorance, and hatred. It is essential that we continue educating ourselves and each other about the history of racial injustice in this country. When we share and learn about others, we learn about ourselves and hopefully find ways to live together and to embrace and better understand one another. When we as a society fail to respect each other, we become inhumane and tragedy often follows. As we learn, we encourage everyone in our community to engage with the struggle for racial equity in whatever way they choose, and to always be mindful of their safety. We all have our role to play when it comes to creating a better society. Thank you, and please stay safe.
Parent Letter Week of 5/4Dear Parents,
On Friday, May 1st, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York State Schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, as our state continues to battle Covid-19. As a result, teachers and students will finish the school year in remote learning. School based free meals will continue to be made available to any that need them. If technology still poses an issue for your child, please reach out to Ms. Zimmer who can help troubleshoot with you (inka.zimmer@ocsny.org). When schools are safe to reopen Opportunity Charter School will have a comprehensive plan to address the loss of academic time in the classroom. In addition, any socio-emotional support our students will need will be available to them and their families as they are now. While we will not be in our physical building, rest assured that we will still be celebrating our seniors and our 8th graders as they finish a very important milestone in their academic career. Details will be forthcoming and we are always open to suggestions from our parents and students! We realize that you may have a lot of questions with this new piece of information and we want to make ourselves available for those questions. On 5/11 from 3-4pm Ms. Francis, Mrs. McCaw and Ms. Marcu (Head of School) will hold a virtual town hall to answer any questions that you may have. Please feel free to send your questions in advance if you’d like to kaitlin.francis@ocsny.org or sade.mccaw@ocsny.org The town hall will be recorded and placed onto our school website in case you are not available to attend. Stay Safe, Ms. Francis; High School Principal Mrs. McCaw; Middle School Principal Estimados Padres:
Manténgase a salvo, Sra. Francis; Directora de la Escuela Secundaria Sra. McCaw; Directora de la Escuela Intermedia Parent Letter Week of 4/27Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are beginning our 6th week of distance learning and we can’t help but to be in awe at all of the fantastic work our students and families have been doing! Each week our students are participating in live classes with their teachers and it’s great to see how engaged they are. As you know, many things are ever changing during this time so we want to keep you up to date on some important information. We know that the news has been a bit confusing these past few weeks with Mayor de Blasio, Governor Cuomo and school closures. For right now, we do know that schools are closed until May 15th, but we will keep you updated as information is provided. With that being said, we have also started a new marking period. This is a fresh, clean slate for your child to take distance learning head on. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any staff member if you are having difficulty with technology or with assignments. Instructions will be sent on how to access your child’s report card through TeacherEase once report cards are finalized for quarter three. On Friday, 5/1 from 1-4, teachers will be holding a virtual Back to School Night: Part 2. This will be very similar to the one held in October where your child’s teacher presented the expectations of their class and offered information on how your child can be successful. With the drastic difference of remote learning we know that you may still have questions about what your child should be doing. You will receive a schedule of when your child’s teacher will be available through Google Meet. We are excited to announce Spirit Week taking place the week of 5/11. Please send any videos or pictures of your child or all of you celebrating with us! You can share these items by emailing krystal.vazquez@ocsny.org or texting them to (646)-357-0272.
Estimados padres/tutores,

There’s a little boy in the Bronx who has struggled in school for years. Most of the kids in his neighborhood aren’t prepared for college by the time they graduate, and things are even harder for him. He has a learning disability and his public school was required to give him specialized services, but that never happened. Click to read the full op-ed in the Daily News. |
